Regulatory Issues

Overview

Practitioners need to understand the impact of poor living conditions on health, safety and welfare, and evaluate the most appropriate interventions. They must be able to apply the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) in resolving housing issues. Practitioners are also required to understand the different types of tenancy and their bearing on the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords, providing timely advice and undertaking enforcement action where appropriate. Finally, practitioners need an understanding of the processes with regard to Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), so that they can deal with significant risks such as fire, overcrowding and poor management.
